The incident happened on Wednesday, Sept. 27 around 2:30 p.m., when 64-year-old Essex County resident Michael Harvey of Methuen was injured while hiking alone with his dog on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail in Sargent’s Purchase, New Hampshire.
According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, Harvey had stepped on an unstable rock while descending the summit of Mount Washington, causing him to lose footing and fall. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries as a result.
Soon after the fall, another hiker happened upon Harvey and called 911 for help.
This prompted a coordinated response from the Appalachian Mountain Club and conservation officers, which began when an AMC rescuer was able to reach Harvey from the Hermit Lake Hut on Mount Washington and administer medical aid.
Meanwhile, conservation officers made the trek to Harvey's location via all-terrain vehicles and hiking and were able to help Harvey to an ATV with the aid of crutches and assistance from other rescuers.
Officers then drove Harvey down the mountain to the Pinkham Notch AMC Visitor Center parking lot. Here, authorities decided that Harvey did not need further medical transport, as he was able to take himself to a hospital, according to officials.
